What is Water Hammer Drain Valve

Dec 29, 2025 Leave a message

The water hammer drain valve consists of a main valve, a high-pressure hydraulic transmission valve, and conduits. It features automatic hydraulic control and unconditional high-pressure opening for releasing the high-pressure hammer. The main valve can open and close quickly and has a function to prevent the hammer from closing itself. The water hammer relief valve is a safety back-end protection device for pump stations, providing unconditional discharge of high-pressure hammers to the outside of the T-shaped structure from sources of water hammer such as pump outlet pipes, check valves, and overpressure points in water delivery pipelines. It effectively improves system safety and reliability.

The Principle of Water Hammer Drain Valves

The principle of water hammer drain valves is based on the fundamental principles of hydrodynamics. In a pipeline system, the automatic opening and closing of the valve reduces or eliminates water hammer pressure. When water hammer pressure occurs in the pipeline, the water hammer relief valve automatically opens, releasing the water flow and thus reducing the pressure. When the water pressure in the pipeline returns to normal, the water hammer relief valve automatically closes, restoring the pipeline to normal operation.

Function and Application of Water Hammer Drain Valves

Water hammer drain valves are mainly used at high points in pipeline systems or at pump station outlets to reduce or eliminate water hammer pressure. They are widely used in pipeline systems in water supply, drainage, industry, construction, agriculture, and other fields to protect the safe operation of pipeline systems and related equipment.

Correct Use of Water Hammer Drain Valves

1. Ensure the location and installation of the water hammer relief valve meet design requirements and do not alter them arbitrarily.

2. Regularly maintain and inspect the water hammer relief valve to keep it in good working condition.

3. During normal use, carefully observe the water pressure and flow in the pipeline system, and promptly identify and address any abnormalities.

4. In addition to introducing a water hammer relief valve into the pipeline system, other anti-water hammer measures should also be installed, such as pressure reducing valves and water hammer absorbers, to comprehensively protect the safe operation of the pipeline system and related equipment.
