What is the function of double block and bleed valve?

DBB valves, short for Double Block and Bleed Valve, achieve double blocking through two independent sealing structures. A vent between the two seals ensures complete isolation of the medium while simultaneously releasing residual substances, thus improving operational safety and system reliability. This design makes it irreplaceable in harsh environments such as petrochemicals, power generation, and water treatment.

DBB Valve Basic Structure and Working Principle

DBB valves typically consist of a valve body, two independent sealing components (such as ball valves, gate valves, or plug valves), and an intermediate venting device. When the valve is closed, both seals simultaneously block the flow of the medium, and the vent in the middle can release residual medium in the valve cavity or detect seal failure. This structure avoids the potential leakage risks of single-seal valves and is particularly suitable for applications involving toxic, flammable, or high-pressure media.

Compared to other traditional valves (such as single-seal gate valves or globe valves), the advantage of DBB valves lies in their dual safety protection. For example, when repairing pipelines, traditional valves may require additional blind flanges or relief valves, while DBB valves simplify the process through integrated design, reducing the possibility of human error.

DBB Valve Application Scenarios

- Petrochemical Industry: Used for isolation of oil pipelines and storage tank inlets and outlets to prevent media mixing or leakage.

- Power Industry: Ensures maintenance safety in steam or cooling water systems.

- Water Treatment: Controls the addition of wastewater or chemical agents to avoid cross-contamination.

Comparison of DBB Valves with Other Valves

(1) Comparison with Single-Seal Valves

Single-seal valves (such as ordinary ball valves) are less expensive, but may cause accidents due to seal failure in high-risk situations. DBB valves significantly reduce this risk through dual sealing and relief functions.

(2) Comparison with Dual-Valve Combinations

Some users install two single valves in series to achieve double shut-off, but this method occupies a lot of space and is cumbersome to operate. The integrated design of DBB valves saves installation space and reduces leakage points.
