What is API 624?

API 624 is a standard developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) primarily used to test the sealing performance of valves under various conditions. This test specifically targets the sealing materials and structural design of valves to ensure they effectively prevent media leakage under conditions such as high temperature and high pressure. By passing this standard's testing, valve manufacturers can verify the reliability and safety of their products in real-world applications.

API 624 Testing Procedure

API 624 testing generally involves the following steps:

- Sample Preparation: The manufacturer must provide valve samples that conform to the standard, including necessary accessories and fittings. These samples are diverse and pre-treated to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

- Test Condition Setting: According to the API 624 standard, specific test conditions are set, including temperature, pressure, and media type. These conditions must simulate the valve's actual working environment to ensure the realism of the test.

- Test Implementation: Testing is conducted in a professional testing laboratory according to standard procedures. The tests mainly include sealing performance testing, wear resistance testing, and corrosion resistance testing to ensure the valve maintains good sealing performance under various conditions.

- Data Recording and Analysis: After the test, the testing organization will record and analyze the data to generate a detailed test report. This data is not only used to evaluate the valve's performance but also provides important information for subsequent product improvements.

Standard Requirements

Test Media: Methane with at least 97% purity to simulate leakage under extreme conditions.

Test Cycle: The valve must undergo 310 mechanical cycles and 3 thermal cycles, with the thermal cycle temperature reaching 260℃ ± 5%.

Leakage Standard: Throughout the test, the leakage value must be controlled within 100 PPMV (partially per million volumes) to ensure low leakage performance.

Packing Requirements: The packing must be adaptable to a temperature range of -29°C to 538°C, and an API 622 certificate or test report must be provided before testing.

Scope of Application: Not applicable to valves with an NPS of 24 or higher, or a CLASS of 1500 or higher.

Applications

Primarily used in industrial valves, such as gate valves and globe valves, to ensure reliable sealing in high-pressure, high-temperature environments in industries such as petroleum and chemical manufacturing.

Test Procedure and Precautions

Safety Measures: The test uses pressurized flammable gas; strict adherence to safety procedures is required to ensure a safe testing environment.

Equipment Requirements: Use equipment such as a flame ionization detector (FID) to monitor leakage and ensure accurate data recording.

Type testing coverage: By testing valves of specific sizes and pressure ratings, other valve models within a certain range can be covered, reducing redundant testing.
