What is a side entry ball valve?
A side-entry ball valve is a type of valve that controls the flow of fluid by rotating a ball. The ball has a through-hole; when the ball rotates until the through-hole is parallel to the pipe axis, fluid can flow freely; conversely, when the ball rotates 90 degrees, making the through-hole perpendicular to the pipe axis, fluid flow is completely blocked. The core component of a side-entry ball valve is a ball that can float freely within the valve body. This design allows the ball to automatically adjust its position according to the pressure of the medium, thus achieving a better sealing effect.
Based on their body structure, inlet side-mounted ball valves can be divided into integral and split types:
Integral type: The ball is installed from one end of the valve body, and the valve seat and ball are fixed with a threaded sleeve. This type has a simple structure, fewer parts, and is suitable for small diameters or viscous media (such as urea insulation jacket applications).
Split type: The valve body is divided into left and right halves along a cross-section perpendicular to the channel. The ball is installed through the split hole, and the left and right valve bodies are connected by flanges or threads. This type is suitable for large diameters or applications requiring frequent maintenance.
Working Principle and Opening/Closing Mechanism
The opening and closing element of an inlet side-mounted ball valve is a perforated ball that rotates 90° around an axis perpendicular to the channel to open or close. Its core principle includes:
Floating ball structure: The ball has no supporting shaft, and the valve seats at both ends hold the ball in a "floating state." When open, the ball's flow channel hole is aligned with the valve channel, minimizing fluid resistance; when closed, the ball rotates 90°, the flow channel hole is perpendicular to the channel, and under fluid pressure, it is pushed towards the outlet valve seat, achieving a seal.
Eccentric Fitting Principle (Unique to Side-Mounted Eccentric Ball Valves): Through the shared trajectory design of the eccentric valve body, ball, and seat, the ball gradually approaches the seat when closed, ultimately achieving a "tighter and tighter" sealing effect. When open, the ball completely disengages from the seat, eliminating wear on the sealing surface.
Performance Advantages and Industry Adaptability
Imported side-mounted ball valves, with their unique design, demonstrate significant advantages in multiple industrial fields:
Structural and Cost Advantages
Simple Structure: Fewer parts, convenient manufacturing and installation, reducing initial costs.
Economical Maintenance: The side-mounted design allows for online maintenance without valve removal, reducing downtime losses; the split structure allows for partial replacement of damaged parts (such as the valve seat), avoiding the scrapping of the entire valve.
Sealing and Wear Resistance
Bimetallic Sealing Pair: The valve seat and ball are made of weld overlay alloy (such as hard alloy or stainless steel), forming a corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant, and high-strength sealing surface, suitable for harsh working conditions (such as coal powder and slurry conveying).
Automatic Compensation Function: The sealing pair has a compensation allowance; after wear, fine-tuning ensures a reliable seal and extends service life.
Self-Cleaning Structure: When the ball opens, the medium flushes the sealing surface, removing accumulated substances and preventing valve jamming caused by crystallizing media.
Fluid Dynamics Characteristics
Low Flow Resistance: The straight-through flow channel design has a resistance coefficient equal to that of a pipeline of the same length. Water loss is zero when fully open, suitable for long-distance pipeline transportation (such as gas and hydraulic ash removal).
Erosion Resistance: The eccentric structure separates the ball from the valve body when opening, preventing direct erosion of the valve seat by the medium.
Operation and Control Convenience
Rapid Opening and Closing: Opening and closing can be completed with a 90° rotation; remote control is supported.
Low Torque Design: The eccentric structure reduces operating torque; easy opening and closing with a small handle lowers the requirements for actuator specifications.
Typical Applications
Imported side-mounted ball valves (especially side-mounted eccentric hemispherical valves) have become the preferred choice for valve upgrades in many industries:
Steel Industry: Pulverized coal injection systems, resistant to pulverized coal particle abrasion, reliable sealing.
Alumina Industry: Slurry and mother liquor transportation, anti-scaling and self-cleaning properties ensure long-term stable operation.
Power Industry: Hydraulic (or dry) ash removal systems, low flow resistance design reduces energy consumption.
Petrochemical and Gas Industry: Mixed-flow transportation, pipelines for easily scaled media, achieving reliable shut-off and regulation.
Selection and Maintenance Points
Selection Basis
Media Characteristics: Corrosive media require welded alloy sealing pairs; media containing particles require consideration of wear resistance.
Operating Pressure: Fixed ball structure is preferred for high-pressure scenarios; side-mounted eccentric hemispherical valves are suitable for medium and high pressure.
Installation Space: Side-mounted valves require reserved axial operating space; top-mounted eccentric hemispherical valves are more suitable for space-constrained scenarios.
