What is a motorized butterfly valve

1. Basic Concepts
The motorized butterfly valve is a special type of butterfly valve. Its core feature is the integrated power drive device, which replaces manual operation with external power sources such as electric, pneumatic or hydraulic to achieve remote control and automatic adjustment of the valve. It uses the rotation of the butterfly plate around the valve shaft as the core action (usually the rotation angle is 0° to 90°), and controls the flow of the medium in the pipeline or cuts off the fluid passage by changing the butterfly plate opening.

2. Core Structure and Drive Mode

Valve Body and Butterfly Plate

The valve body is usually made of pressure-resistant materials such as cast steel and stainless steel, and the butterfly plate is a disc-shaped metal or composite structure. The sealing surface can be configured with soft materials such as rubber and PTFE or metal hard seals.
The drive mechanism is directly connected to the valve stem to drive the butterfly plate to rotate to achieve opening and closing or throttling.

‌Electric drive‌: driven by motor and reduction device, supports precise adjustment of opening (such as proportional adjustment), suitable for scenarios that require frequent operation or access to automation systems (such as water plants, power systems);
‌Pneumatic drive‌: uses compressed air to drive the cylinder, with fast response speed and excellent explosion-proof performance, often used in flammable and explosive environments such as chemical industry and food processing;
‌Hydraulic drive‌: uses hydraulic system to provide high torque, suitable for the control of large-diameter and high-pressure pipelines (such as oil pipelines).

3. ‌Application scenarios and advantages‌
‌Industrial automation control‌: realize dynamic flow adjustment in sewage treatment and thermal pipelines, and work with PLC system to improve process efficiency;
‌Emergency cutoff‌: pneumatic butterfly valve can be equipped with quick exhaust valve, which can complete the closing action within 0.5 seconds in emergency situations (such as gas leak emergency);
‌Special medium treatment‌: motorized butterfly valves made of corrosion-resistant materials (such as 316L stainless steel, C276 alloy) are suitable for medium control of pipelines in acid and alkali solutions and high salt spray environments.
4. Selection considerations

Media adaptability: Soft-sealed butterfly valves are suitable for clean liquids (such as water and oil), while hard-sealed butterfly valves are more suitable for medium containing particles or high temperature (such as steam and powder);

Drive matching: Electric butterfly valves need to consider power supply stability and power consumption, and pneumatic models rely on the air supply capacity of the compressed air system;

Sealing level: Different levels of sealing structures such as ANSI Class 150 to Class 600 need to be selected according to the working pressure.
