What is a 3 piece ball valve?
Three-piece ball valves and gate valves belong to the same type of valve, the difference being that the closing element in a three-piece ball valve is a ball. The ball rotates around the valve body's centerline to open and close the valve. Three-piece ball valves are mainly used in pipelines for shut-off, distribution, and changing the flow direction of media.
working principle
The working principle is to open and close the valve by rotating the valve body. When the handwheel is turned counterclockwise, the valve stem moves in the opposite direction, and its bottom angled plane causes the ball to disengage from the valve seat. The valve stem continues to rise and interacts with the guide pin in the valve stem's spiral groove, causing the ball to begin rotating without friction until it reaches the fully open position. To close, the handwheel is turned clockwise, causing the valve stem and ball to rotate simultaneously by 90° until the ball is tightly pressed against the valve seat, achieving a complete seal.
