How does a 3 port ball valve work?

A three-way ball valve is a fluid control valve with three fluid channels. The valve is opened, closed, and the flow direction of the medium is changed by rotating the ball.

Classification

Based on their structure, three-way ball valves can be divided into T-type, L-type, and Y-type. A T-type three-way ball valve can connect three orthogonal pipes and disconnect the third channel, serving as a flow divider or merging valve. An L-type three-way ball valve can only connect two orthogonal pipes and cannot simultaneously maintain the connection of the third pipe; it only serves a distribution function. A Y-type three-way ball valve can be designed with 120° and 135° diversion ports for medium switching.

Working Principle

The working principle of a three-way ball valve is mainly based on its unique structure and operation:

Ball and Seat: The core component of a three-way ball valve is a ball with three channels, each connecting to one of the three pipes. A sealing surface is formed between the ball and the seat, ensuring that the valve prevents leakage when closed.

Valve Stem and Transmission Mechanism: The valve stem is connected to the ball; rotating the stem rotates the ball. The transmission mechanism (such as a handwheel or electric actuator) drives the valve stem rotation.

Opening and Closing Process:

To open, rotate the handwheel counter-clockwise (or activate the electric actuator). The valve stem moves counter-clockwise, and its bottom angled surface disengages the ball from the valve seat. The valve stem continues to rise and interacts with the guide pin in the valve stem's spiral groove, causing the ball to begin rotating without friction until it reaches the fully open position.

To close, rotate the handwheel clockwise (or deactivate the electric actuator). The valve stem begins to descend, causing the ball to leave the valve seat and begin rotating. Continuing to rotate the handwheel, the guide pin embedded in its spiral groove causes the valve stem and ball to rotate simultaneously by 90°. Near the close, the ball has rotated 90° without contacting the valve seat. The last few rotations of the handwheel mechanically wedge the bottom angled surface of the valve stem against the ball, pressing it tightly against the valve seat for a complete seal.

Applications

Due to their unique structure and excellent performance, three-way ball valves are widely used in various industrial fields, including but not limited to:

Petroleum Industry: Used to control the flow and distribution of media such as oil and natural gas.

Chemical Industry: In chemical production, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of various acidic, alkaline, and corrosive media.

Metallurgical Industry: In the smelting processes of iron and steel and non-ferrous metals, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of high-temperature media.

Power Industry: In thermal power plants, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of media such as steam and water.

Other Industries: Three-way ball valves also play an important role in process pipelines in industries such as light industry, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, papermaking, and air conditioning.
