Automated Cast Gate Valve

Oct 20, 2026 Leave a message

An automated cast gate valve is the isolation workhorse of large-bore, low-pressure-drop lines - but sizing the wrong actuator, or using it to throttle, destroys the seat within months. Built to API 600 from a cast steel body and driven by an electric or pneumatic multi-turn actuator, it gives a straight-through, full-bore, bi-directional block from NPS 2 to 48 at Class 150–2500.

Features

Full-bore, straight-through flow. Fully open, the wedge clears the bore - virtually no pressure drop and the line can be pigged, rodded or inspected through the valve.

Bi-directional sealing. The wedge seats under line pressure in either flow direction, so orientation is not critical on most duties.

Multi-turn actuation with end protection. Torque and position limit switches stop the motor at the seats; a self-locking worm gear holds the gate without power.

Visible position (rising stem). An OS&Y stem shows open/closed at a glance and needs vertical clearance; a non-rising stem suits buried or space-limited installs.

Heavy-wall cast body per ASME B16.34. Thick sections absorb thermal cycling, sour service and decades of plant duty.

Field-serviceable trim. Renewable seat rings and wedge overlays (13Cr + Stellite 6) extend life without replacing the body.

Automation-ready. ISO 5210 (multi-turn) or ISO 5211 mounting flange, 4–20 mA / fieldbus feedback and fail position on request.

Fire-safe path. Metal seat and graphite packing give a secondary seal after a fire; soft-seated versions are tested to API 607.

Cast vs Forged and Material Choice

An API 600 gate valve is a bolted bonnet gate valve with a cast body; an API 602 valve is forged and sized for small bore. The dividing line is about NPS 2: below it, forged API 602 is more compact, cheaper and gives a denser, defect-free grain structure (preferred for H2S); at NPS 4 and above, casting is the only economical route. Note that there is no Class 800 flanged rating - Class 800 valves carry socket-weld or threaded ends and step to Class 600 or 900 when flanged. For NACE MR0175 sour service, all wetted parts are selected and certified to ISO 15156, with Trim 5 (316 SS stem + Stellite-faced seat) the usual configuration.

Dimensions and End Connections

A flanged gate valve follows ASME B16.5 up to NPS 24 and ASME B16.47 above; butt-weld ends follow ASME B16.25. Face-to-face dimensions come from ASME B16.10 (long pattern for gate valves). The values below are typical for Class 150/300 flanged units - they grow with class and differ by manufacturer pattern, so confirm against the ordered class.

Table 3 - Typical face-to-face (ASME B16.10, Class 150/300 long pattern). Values in mm and inch; verify for the specified class.

Quality Control and Testing

Every valve is hydrostatically shell- and seat-tested per API 598, then graded for seat leakage to ISO 5208. Shell and seat pressures scale with the class, and each valve is traced to its heat by an EN 10204 3.1 material test report.

Table 4 - Standard test scope for an automated cast steel gate valve.

Test Basis Value / requirement
Shell hydrostatic API 598 1.5 × rated pressure
Seat test API 598 1.1 × rated pressure (liquid or gas)
Seat leakage ISO 5208 Rate D (metal) default; Rate A (soft-seated)
Low-pressure air seat optional 0.6 MPa (≈87 psi)
NDE per specification MT / PT on welds, PMI on trim
Fire-safe API 607 if soft-seated
Documentation EN 10204 3.1 MTR; 3.2 with third-party inspection

FAQ

What is the difference between a cast and a forged gate valve?

A cast gate valve is built to API 600 from a cast body (typically ASTM A216 WCB) and covers roughly NPS 2 through 48 at Class 150–2500 - the economical choice for large-bore main-line isolation. A forged gate valve follows API 602, is sized NPS ¼ through 4 (up to about NPS 6 for some designs) and is preferred below NPS 2 or where Class 800–4500 and dense, defect-free grain structure matter. The two standards are complementary, not interchangeable at the same size and class.

Can a cast gate valve be used for throttling?

No. A gate valve is an on-off isolator only. Cracking it partially open creates a high-velocity crescent-shaped jet that causes wire drawing (erosion channels across the seat) and cavitation, destroying the machined sealing faces within months. Always operate it fully open or fully closed.

How does an electric actuator open a cast gate valve?

An electric actuator is a multi-turn unit: its motor and worm gear train rotate the stem nut (rising stem) or drive the stem linearly (non-rising stem) through many revolutions until the wedge seats. Torque and position limit switches stop the motor at the end points, and a self-locking worm holds the gate without power. Size the actuator on the maximum breakaway and seating torque at the highest differential pressure, with a 1.25–1.5 safety factor for on-off duty.

What seat leakage rate applies to a cast steel gate valve?

Metal-seated cast steel gate valves are tested to ISO 5208. The default industrial benchmark is Rate D (up to 0.1 mm³/s × DN with liquid, 30 cm³/s × DN with gas); soft-seated versions target bubble-tight Rate A. Note that "Class VI per API 598" is incorrect wording - API 598 uses Classes A/B/C/D, while Class VI belongs to ANSI/FCI 70-2 for control valves.

Is a cast gate valve bi-directional?

Yes, for most designs. The wedge seals against the downstream seat under line pressure and holds in either flow direction, so a cast gate valve is specified as a bi-directional, full-bore isolator. Parallel-slide (double-disc) designs are chosen where tight bi-directional shutoff is critical.

Does a cast gate valve provide double block and bleed (DBB)?

No - a single gate valve is a single-isolation device. It has one closure member and no trapped body cavity to bleed, so it does not meet the DBB definition. To block and bleed between two line sections, specify two gate valves with a bleed valve between them, or use a DBB ball valve where the duty allows.

Which standards govern an automated cast gate valve?

The valve body follows API 600 (cast steel, bolted bonnet) with dimensions and pressure-temperature limits per ASME B16.34; seat and shell tests follow API 598; seat leakage is graded by ISO 5208; fire-safe soft-seated versions are tested to API 607; and the actuator mounts on an ISO 5210 (multi-turn) or ISO 5211 flange. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 applies for sour service.

What size and pressure range does API 600 cover?

API 600 cast steel gate valves span about NPS ½ through 60 (NPS 2 and above is the typical sweet spot) and Class 150 through 2500, with flanged (ASME B16.5 / B16.47) or butt-weld (ASME B16.25) ends. Above roughly NPS 4, cast construction is the only economical option; below NPS 2, API 602 forged is the standard.

What is the lead time and minimum order quantity?

Minimum order is 1 set. Stock and standard-size electric or pneumatic units typically ship in 7–15 days; engineered or non-standard material (WC6, LCC, CF8M) and large bore NPS 24+ usually run 20–35 days. Confirm exact lead time against your specification and quantity.

Do you provide material test reports and third-party inspection?

Yes. Every valve ships with an EN 10204 3.1 material test report (MTR) and is hydrostatically shell- and seat-tested per API 598. Third-party inspection (SGS, TÜV, BV, or client-nominated) and additional NDE (MT/PT, PMI) are available on request and written into the purchase order.

What is the warranty and can you supply OEM?

We provide 18 months warranty on the actuator and 12 months on the valve body from the date of shipment, plus spare trim and responsive after-sales support. OEM and ODM are supported: we can build to your drawing, brand and tag requirement. (Figures are industry-typical and subject to final commercial confirmation.)

How do I specify a cast gate valve on a purchase order?

State, in order: standard (API 600) · size and class (e.g. NPS 8, Class 300) · body material (A216 WCB, A217 WC6, A352 LCC, A351 CF8M) · trim (13Cr + Stellite 6, or CF8M) · ends (RF/RTJ flanged or BW) · operation (electric or pneumatic multi-turn, with fail position) · seat leakage (ISO 5208 Rate A or D) · testing and NDE · and any NACE MR0175 requirement. Send us the line size, pressure, temperature and media and we will confirm the specification.
