Scope of Supply

The package split along the usual lines of an onshore field development. Trunnion ball valves took the wellhead flowline and manifold isolation duty, where full bore and double block and bleed are required for integrity testing of the line. High-performance butterfly valves covered the larger, lower-pressure duties - flare and vent headers above all - where a ball valve stops making sense on weight and cost.

Service Valve Design points
Wellhead flowlines and manifolds Trunnion ball, full bore, DBB Soft seat with fire-safe metal backup; cavity relief reviewed for waxy crude
Process inlet and section isolation Ball or butterfly, per line size Spring-return actuation; position feedback to the ESD system
Flare and vent headers Double-offset butterfly Tight shutoff at low differential; fire-safe per API 607

What Makes an ESDV Different From the Same Valve Without the Letters

An ESDV is not a valve with better steel. The standard valve is chosen for its process duty; the ESDV is chosen for its behaviour when something goes wrong, and three requirements follow from that.

Fail-safe action lives in the spring. When the ESD system drops the signal and the air or power fails with it, the valve must still move to its safe position. On this package that meant spring-return actuators, with the solenoid valve and positioner specified so the loop closes on de-energisation. The actuator and the valve were function-tested together, because the safety case is written against the assembly.

The fire-safe certificate backs up the soft seat. An ESDV needs tight shutoff in normal service, which points to soft seats. API 607 answers the obvious objection: after the soft seat burns away in a pool fire, a metal backup seal holds the isolation long enough for the emergency plan to work. Both certificates - soft-seat shutoff and fire-safe type test - travel with the valve.

Movability is proven without shutting the plant down. A valve that moves twice a year, once in the FAT and once in an emergency, is a valve nobody trusts. Partial-stroke testing lets the control system nudge the disc or ball a few degrees against production, confirming that the assembly is not seized. It is a line item on the actuator specification, and it is far cheaper to order it that way than to retrofit it.

Waxy Crude and an Inland Jobsite

Two features of this project shaped the supply more than any size on the valve schedule.

The crude is waxy and high-viscosity, which is typical of the East African rift basin fields. Wax that settles in a valve cavity can wedge the ball off its seat or stop a disc from seating fully, so seat design and cavity relief were reviewed against this service rather than taken from a catalogue row. The consequence is not exotic metallurgy - it is careful attention to cavities, drains and seat materials that most water or gas service never has to think about.

Uganda is landlocked. The consignment moved overland from the coast, which sets the packaging problem: every case has to survive transshipment at intermediate points and be liftable by the cranes that exist along the route, not the ones at the destination. Cases were sized accordingly, flange faces protected, desiccant packed against the long transit, and nameplates carried tag numbers so each unit could be matched to its test file when it reached site.

Inspection and Certification

Shell tests ran at 1.5× rated pressure and seat tests at 1.1×, witnessed by third-party inspection against the purchase order. Every valve shipped with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates, upgraded to 3.2 where the order called for TPI endorsement. Fire-safe type-test certificates per API 607, SIL capability data per IEC 61508 / 61511 for the actuated assemblies, and FAT records for each actuator-valve pairing completed the acceptance file. Fugitive-emission performance was documented where the line class required it.

FAQ

What does ESDV mean and what does the valve do?

ESDV stands for emergency shutdown valve. It is the automatic isolation barrier between a process section and everything downstream of it, connected to the plant's emergency shutdown system. On loss of power, signal or air it must move to its predefined safe position without operator action. In an oil field facility, ESDVs sit on wellhead flowlines, process inlet headers and flare and vent systems.

Which valve types were supplied for this project?

The package combined trunnion-mounted ball valves for wellhead flowline and manifold isolation with high-performance butterfly valves for larger, lower-pressure service such as flare and vent headers. Both types were configured as ESDVs, so the difference between them lay in line size and pressure class rather than in the safety function each performs.

How is fail-safe action achieved on an ESDV?

An ESDV must reach its safe position on loss of power or signal, which on this class of valve means spring-return actuation - the spring moves the valve, not the power supply. The actuator, solenoid and partial-stroke hardware are function-tested with the valve as a complete assembly, because the safety loop is judged on the combined unit, not on the valve body alone.

What fire-safe and SIL requirements apply to ESDVs?

ESDVs carry soft seats for tight shutoff, so fire-safe certification to API 607 applies - a metal backup seal takes over when the soft seat burns away. On the safety-instrumented side, the actuated valve is issued with SIL capability data per IEC 61508 / 61511 so the EPC can place it in its safety loop, and partial-stroke testing can be specified to prove movability without interrupting production.

Why does waxy crude matter for valve selection?

Crude from the East African rift basins is waxy and high-viscosity, and wax that settles in a valve cavity can push the ball or disc off its seat or keep it from seating fully. Seat design, cavity relief and cavity venting were reviewed against this service, and the valves were positioned and supported so drainability of the line is not defeated by the valve installation.

What documentation comes with an ESDV supply?

EN 10204 3.1 material certificates, upgraded to 3.2 where third-party inspection applies; fire-safe certificates per API 607; SIL capability data for the actuated assemblies; shell and seat test records witnessed against the purchase order; and FAT records for actuator-valve assemblies. Nameplates carry tag numbers so each unit traces back to its test file.
