Are Butterfly Valves Cheaper Than Ball Valves

Apr 16, 2025 Leave a message

1. General price trends
Butterfly valves are generally less expensive than ball valves:
Under the same specifications (e.g., material, pressure level), butterfly valves are generally lower in cost than ball valves due to their simple structure (the valve plate rotates to control the fluid) and fewer consumables.
The spool (ball) of a ball valve requires higher machining accuracy and has more sealing surfaces, resulting in an increase in its manufacturing cost.

2. Key factors affecting prices

‌factors‌ ‌butterfly valve‌ ball valve
Material cost ‌ Commonly used cast iron, carbon steel, low cost; stainless steel or special alloy material when the price rises. More stainless steel, alloy steel and other high-strength materials, the sealing surface requires special treatment (such as spraying ceramics), a significant increase in cost.
‌Actuator type‌ Pneumatic butterfly valves need to be matched with the air source system, the initial cost is low; electric butterfly valves due to the high complexity of the motor and control system, the price rises. Electric ball valve price is higher than pneumatic ball valves, but all need to consider the actuator and valve body adaptation costs.
‌Applications‌ Suitable for low-temperature and low-pressure scenarios with optimised design costs. High temperature, high pressure or corrosive media scenes need to strengthen the valve body structure, resulting in increased costs.

3. Long-term cost considerations
Low maintenance cost of butterfly valve: simple structure, less wearing parts, maintenance frequency and cost is lower than ball valve.
Advantage of ball valve life: stable sealing performance, longer service life in high-pressure frequent opening and closing scenarios, long-term replacement costs may be lower.
