What is What is a forged three-way ball valve

The forged steel three-way ball valve is a variation of the ball valve. Compared to ordinary ball valves, it can meet the requirements of fluid diversion or merging in pipelines. Its working principle is based on the movement of its ball. In the closed state, the valve orifice, ball, and pipeline are parallel, with fewer obstructions, low flow rate, and low pressure. In the open state, the orifice, ball, and flow direction are perpendicular, with increased obstructions, high flow rate, and correspondingly increased pressure. Therefore, by rotating the control handle, the position of the ball in the orifice can be controlled, thereby changing the flow direction and cutting off the flow of the medium.

I. Structural Composition

The main components of the forged steel three-way ball valve (such as the valve body, valve cover, valve stem, and ball) are all made of forged steel. Forged steel, through a high-temperature forging process, forms a uniform and dense internal structure, avoiding defects such as sand holes, cracks, and air holes that may occur in cast steel parts, significantly improving the valve's sealing performance and structural strength. Its core structure includes:

Ball: The surface is machined with three channels, each connecting to one of the three pipelines.

Valve seat: Forms a sealing surface with the ball, ensuring no leakage when closed.

Valve stem: Connects the ball to the transmission mechanism (such as a handwheel or electric actuator), driving the ball to rotate.

Sealing components: Includes the valve seat seal ring, valve stem packing, etc., preventing media leakage.

II. Classification and Flow Channel Forms

Based on the different ball channel structures, forged steel three-way ball valves can be classified into the following types:

L-type three-way ball valve:

The ball has an L-shaped flow channel, connecting two perpendicularly intersecting pipes (such as horizontal and vertical directions).

Suitable for switching the direction of media flow, but cannot simultaneously connect a third pipe.

Typical applications: Branch pipelines in heating systems, single-path switching in chemical processes.

T-type three-way ball valve:

The ball has a T-shaped flow channel, allowing simultaneous connection of three pipes or disconnection of one of them.

Suitable for media diversion, merging, or flow direction switching.

Typical applications: Multi-branch control of oil and gas, multi-feed in reactors.

Y-type three-way ball valve:

The ball's flow path angle is 120° or 135°, installed in a Y-shaped pipeline.

Suitable for smooth switching of media flow direction, reducing pressure loss.

Typical applications: Clean pipelines in the pharmaceutical industry, multi-directional flow control in food processing.

III. Working Principle

The forged steel three-way ball valve achieves valve opening, closing, and flow direction control by rotating the ball:

Opening process:

Rotate the handwheel counterclockwise (or start the electric actuator), the valve stem drives the ball away from the valve seat.

The guide pin in the valve stem's spiral groove causes the ball to rotate without friction until it reaches the fully open position.

At this point, the ball's flow path is aligned with the pipeline, allowing free flow of the media.

Closing process:

Rotate the handwheel clockwise, the valve stem pushes the ball to contact the valve seat.

The guide pin in the valve stem's spiral groove causes the ball to rotate 90°, disengaging from the valve seat and continuing to rotate to the closed position.

The angled plane at the bottom of the valve stem mechanically weaves the ball, ensuring a tight seal.

IV. Performance Characteristics

Excellent Sealing Performance:

The ball and seat sealing surfaces are precision-machined, and a spring structure pushes the seat towards the ball, achieving bidirectional sealing at the inlet and outlet.

The hard seal structure has a lifespan of over 100,000 opening and closing cycles, suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.

Compact and Reliable Structure:

The integrated design reduces flange connection points, lowering the risk of leakage.

The four-sided seat sealing type ensures balanced force distribution and reliable sealing of the closing channel.

Simple and Quick Operation:

Opening and closing can be completed by rotating the ball 90°, supporting manual, pneumatic, and electric actuation methods.

The low-torque design reduces actuator size, facilitating remote control.

Corrosion Resistance and Long Service Life:

Valve body materials are available in stainless steel (e.g., CF8M), carbon steel (WCB), or special alloys (e.g., Hastelloy).

Sealing surface materials can be selected according to the media (e.g., PTFE-lined ball valves are resistant to strong acids and alkalis).

Easy Maintenance:

The modular seat design allows for online replacement without valve disassembly.

The valve stem packing gland is adjustable to prevent leakage after long-term use.

V. Application Areas

Forged steel three-way ball valves, due to their high efficiency and reliability, are widely used in the following scenarios:

Petroleum Industry: Multi-branch control of oil wells, media distribution in LNG storage tanks.

Chemical Industry: Multi-feed switching for reactors, catalyst injection systems.

Pharmaceutical Industry: Multi-directional diversion of clean pipelines (requires sanitary design).

Heating Systems: Diversion and merging control of steam or hot water networks.

Metallurgical Industry: High-temperature media flow distribution (e.g., steel smelting).
