What is an electric solenoid valve?

A solenoid valve is a fundamental automation component that uses electromagnetic force to control the on/off state or flow direction of fluids. It is widely used in industrial automation, machinery manufacturing, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other fields. Its core principle is that the electromagnetic force generated by an electromagnetic coil drives the valve core to move, changing the connection state of the fluid passage, thereby achieving precise control of liquids or gases. Based on different functions and structures, solenoid valves can be divided into various types such as direct-acting, pilot-operated, and proportional valves, and can be further classified according to the number of channels (e.g., two-way, three-way) and valve core position (two-position, three-position).

Solenoid Valve Types and Structures

1. Classification by Function

Directional Control Valves

Two-position two-way valve: Controls only on/off state (e.g., normally open/normally closed).

Two-position three-way valve: Switches fluid flow direction (e.g., intake/exhaust).

Two-position four-way valve: Used for reversing control of double-acting cylinders.

Three-position valve: Has a neutral position function (e.g., pressure holding, exhaust, pressurization, etc.).

2. Classification by Structure

Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve

Structure: Electromagnetic force directly drives the valve core, without intermediate media.

Features: Fast response (5-50ms), small size, low power consumption, but smaller diameter (typically ≤DN15).

Applications: Low flow rate, low pressure scenarios (e.g., water, air, steam).

Pilot-Operated Solenoid Valve

Structure: Electromagnetic force controls the pilot valve, which actuates the main valve core based on media pressure.

Features: Can control large diameter (DN15-DN800) and high-pressure fluids, but slower response (50-200ms).

Applications: High flow rate, high pressure scenarios (e.g., hydraulic systems, steam pipelines).

Step-by-Step Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve

Structure: Combines direct-acting and pilot-operated types; direct-acting at low pressure, pilot-operated at high pressure.

Features: Wide pressure range (0-16MPa), medium diameter (DN10-DN50).

Applications: Scenarios with large pressure fluctuations (e.g., gas pipelines). 3. Classification by Media

Gas Solenoid Valves: Corrosion resistant, good sealing (e.g., NBR, PTFE materials).

Liquid Solenoid Valves: Wear-resistant, anti-clogging (e.g., stainless steel valve body).

Steam Solenoid Valves: High temperature resistant (≤220℃), fast response.

Fuel Oil Solenoid Valves: Explosion-proof design (e.g., Ex dIICT4 certification).

Working Principle of Solenoid Valves

Electrification Stage: The electromagnetic coil generates a magnetic field, attracting the armature and overcoming the spring force to move the valve core.

Media Flow: The valve core opens or closes the channel, controlling the flow of fluid.

De-energization Stage: The spring resets, the valve core returns to its initial position, and fluid flow is interrupted.

Key Parameters:

Response Time: The time from energization to the complete actuation of the valve core (direct-acting <50ms, pilot-operated >50ms).

Leakage: International standard ISO 5208, typically ≤0.1% of rated flow.

Solenoid Valve Selection Guide

1. Core Parameters

Nominal Diameter (DN): Select according to flow requirements (e.g., DN10 corresponds to a flow rate of approximately 1.2 m³/h).

Pressure Range: Working pressure must be lower than rated pressure (e.g., PN16 valve body is suitable for ≤1.6 MPa).

Media Temperature: Temperature resistance range must cover actual operating conditions (e.g., steam valves require ≥180℃).

Voltage Rating: AC220V (commonly used in industry), DC24V (explosion-proof scenarios), AC110V (imported equipment).

2. Special Requirements

Explosion-proof Requirements: Ex dIICT4 (coal mine), Ex iaIIC T6 (chemical industry).

Material Selection:

Corrosive Media: 316L stainless steel, PTFE seal.

Food Grade: 304 stainless steel, EPDM seal.

Installation Method: Threaded connection (DN≤50), flange connection (DN≥65), clamp connection (sanitary grade).

3. Selection Steps

Determine the media type (gas/liquid/steam).

Calculate flow and pressure requirements.

Select valve body material and sealing material.

Confirm voltage and explosion-proof rating.

Verify response time and lifespan requirements.

Key Selection Parameters

Fluid Type: Select valve body material (e.g., stainless steel, brass) based on the media (water, oil, gas, corrosive fluids);

Operating Pressure and Flow Rate: Pneumatic or low-flow scenarios are acceptable;

Response Speed: Fast-acting characteristics for high-frequency switching (e.g., automated production lines);

Installation Environment: Outdoor or humid environments require explosion-proof and waterproof ratings. Avoid inverted installation to reduce impurity accumulation.

Example:

Scenario: Controlling compressed air (pressure 0.6MPa, flow rate 2m³/min).

Selection: 2-position 5-way pilot-operated solenoid valve (DN20, PN1.0, AC220V, NBR seal).

Application Scenarios of Solenoid Valves

1. Industrial Automation

Pneumatic Control: Drives cylinders, clamps, and vacuum suction cups.

Hydraulic Systems: Controls oil circuit reversal and pressure regulation.

CNC Machine Tools: Coolant on/off control.

2. Home Appliances

Washing Machines: Inlet and drain valves.

Air Conditioners: Refrigerant flow control.

Gas Water Heaters: Ignition safety valve.

3. Automotive Industry
