1. Definition and core functions
The three-way ball valve is a valve device that controls the flow of media between three pipelines by rotating a ball with a channel inside. It is mainly used to achieve the diversion, confluence or flow direction switching of fluids. Its core functions include:
Multi-channel control: By changing the rotation angle of the ball, the three ports (inlet, outlet A, outlet B) form different connection states;
Opening, closing and regulation: It can completely cut off or adjust the medium flow, which is suitable for industrial scenarios that require frequent operations.
2. Classification and structural type
Classification by flow channel form:
T-type: The ball channel is T-shaped, allowing three pipelines to be connected or any one of them to be closed at the same time, suitable for diversion and confluence scenarios;
L-type: It can only connect two orthogonal pipelines, and the third channel is blocked, which is often used for flow direction switching;
Y-type: The channel is at an angle of 120° or 135°, which is used for medium switching and efficient distribution to reduce flow resistance.
Classification by driving mode:
Manual type: operated by handwheel or handle, low cost and easy maintenance;
Pneumatic/electric type: integrated actuator, supports automatic control and remote operation.
3. Core structure and materials
Valve body: mostly made of stainless steel (such as 304, 316), carbon steel or alloy, resistant to high pressure and corrosive media;
Ball: core rotating component, the channel shape corresponds to the valve type (T/L/Y type), and the surface is often hardened to improve wear resistance;
Sealing components:
Soft seal: using PTFE, rubber and other materials, suitable for low-temperature clean media;
Hard seal: metal + graphite composite layer, resistant to high temperature, high pressure and particle-containing media.
4. Working principle and operating characteristics
Rotation control: The valve stem drives the ball to rotate 90° (some models need to rotate 120°), and the flow direction is switched through the cooperation of the ball channel and the valve seat;
Sealing mechanism: The ball fits tightly with the valve seat, and the sealing effect is enhanced by the medium pressure or spring preload;
Low flow resistance design: The full-diameter structure makes the medium flow resistance close to that of a straight pipe, reducing energy consumption.
5. Typical application areas
Petrochemical industry: Diverting crude oil and additives in oil refining units, or switching heat exchanger passages;
Pharmaceuticals and food: Sanitary clamp-type three-way ball valves are used for aseptic fluid distribution (such as liquid medicine filling lines);
Water treatment system: Control the fluid path switching of backwashing, filtration and other processes;
Energy equipment: Three-way ball valves with integrated temperature and pressure sensors are used to monitor the status of pipeline media. VI. Selection and Adaptation Points
Working Condition Matching: Select sealing materials according to the medium temperature, pressure and corrosiveness (e.g. hard seal for high temperature);
Structural Adaptation: Flange or clamp connection is preferred to ensure compatibility with pipelines;
Functional Expansion: T-type is selected when multi-directional control is required, and L-type is selected when switching to a single flow direction.
