Motor Operated Valves MOV

Oct 20, 2026 Leave a message

Motor operated valves (MOVs) pair a gate, globe, ball or butterfly valve with an electric actuator so it can be opened, closed or positioned from a control room instead of by a handwheel. The actuator - motor, gear, limit and torque switches, controls - is the operating element; the valve body only provides the shutoff.

Specifying a valve body without matching the actuator to breakaway torque and confirming the fail-position is the most common reason an MOV will not close when the process demands it. This guide treats the drive method as the subject, not the accessory.

GNEE supplies the valve and actuator as one matched package, sized to your differential pressure and duty, with ISO 5208 seat testing and EN 15714-2 actuator classification. Send your valve type, rating, voltage and fail-position to request a quote.

What Is a Motor Operated Valve?

A motor operated valve is a complete package: a valve plus an electric actuator that converts electrical power into shaft torque (quarter-turn) or thrust (multi-turn). It is not a valve with a motor bolted on as an afterthought - the actuator defines how the valve behaves when energy or signal is lost, how fast it strokes, and how precisely it holds an intermediate position.

In plant shorthand the same package is also called an MOV valve, an electric motor operated valve, or an electric actuated valve - all meaning the valve-plus-actuator assembly, not the valve body alone.

Standard family is judged first, because it decides what the datasheet can claim. The valve body follows its product standard - API 600 (gate), API 602 (compact forged gate/globe), API 623 (globe), API 608 (ball), API 609 (butterfly), or API 6D for pipeline service - with the pressure-temperature envelope from ASME B16.34. The electric actuator follows IEC 60034-1 (rotating machines), EN 15714-2 (electric actuator classification), and the mounting interfaces ISO 5210 (multi-turn) / ISO 5211 (part-turn). When a purchase order references both, the valve product standard governs dimensions and pressure; the actuator standards govern the drive.

Remote operation without air. One cable replaces instrument-air lines, dryers and regulators - the lowest-infrastructure way to automate a valve.

Rigid mid-position holding. A gear train holds setpoint regardless of line-pressure fluctuation, giving tight modulating control with no air-compressibility hunting.

Fail behaviour is a choice, not a default. Plain electric actuators stay put on power loss; fail-open or fail-close must be specified (see Actuator Sizing).

Seat Leakage and Shutoff Rate (ISO 5208)

ISO 5208:2015 closure-test leakage rates (liquid test, per DN)
Rate Liquid leakage (mm³/s × DN) Typical use
Rate A 0 (no visible leakage) Soft-seated valves, bellows seal - zero leakage by definition
Rate B 0.01 × DN Precision lapped metal seats (e.g. triple-offset butterfly)
Rate C 0.03 × DN High-temperature / severe-service metal seats
Rate D 0.1 × DN General-purpose metal-seated isolation (default)

The motor operated valve leakage class follows ISO 5208: a soft-sealed MOV is always Rate A - zero visible leakage. A general metal-seated MOV is normally Rate D, allowing 0.1 × DN mm³/s of liquid (about 10–12 drops/min at DN 100). Gas-test allowance scales roughly 300× for the same rate. Specify the rate on the purchase order; if omitted, the valve product standard's default applies. Note: writing "Class VI per API 598" on an isolation MOV is incorrect - that belongs to the ANSI/FCI 70-2 control-valve leakage system, not to ISO 5208 factory seat testing.

Valve Bodies an MOV Can Automate

An MOV is a package, not a single valve type. The valve body is chosen for the service; the actuator is then matched to its motion profile and torque. Each body type carries its own product standard and its own engineering caution:

Motor operated gate valve - multi-turn, high thrust at seating/unseating; API 600 (bolted bonnet) or API 602 (compact forged ≤ NPS 4). Caution: thermal binding in high-temperature steam lines.

Motor operated globe valve - multi-turn, high and near-constant thrust through the stroke; API 623 / BS 1873. Caution: high differential pressure needs a high-thrust actuator; throttling-capable.

Motor operated ball valve - quarter-turn, peak torque at breakaway and seat entry; API 608 / ISO 17292, API 6D for pipeline. Fast isolation; API 607 fire-safe; seat wear raises breakaway torque.

Motor operated butterfly valve - quarter-turn, dynamic torque that varies with disc angle; API 609 (Category A/B) / EN 593. Large-bore, low-cost; flow velocity creates dynamic torque opposing the actuator.

Valve Type × Actuator Suitability

Valve type vs actuator motion, torque profile and body standard
Valve type Motion Torque / thrust profile Body standard Critical consideration
Gate Linear (multi-turn) High at seating / unseating API 600 / API 602 Thermal binding in high-temp steam; thrust-rated actuator
Globe Linear (multi-turn) High and constant through stroke API 623 / BS 1873 High differential pressure; high-thrust actuator
Ball Rotary (quarter-turn) Peak at breakaway & seat entry API 608 / ISO 17292 / API 6D Fast isolation; seat wear raises breakaway torque
Butterfly Rotary (quarter-turn) Dynamic, varies with disc angle API 609 / EN 593 Flow velocity creates dynamic torque opposing actuator

Actuator Sizing, Duty Cycle and Fail Position

Because the product word names the drive method, the actuator is the content body. Three things decide whether an MOV works: the power source and fail behaviour, the torque or thrust limit, and how the mid-position is held.

How to size a motor operated valve starts from the electric valve actuator torque or thrust the valve needs across the full stroke, not the catalogue breakaway number alone.

Power source and fail behaviour. A standard electric actuator stores no energy, so on power loss it stays put - this is the default MOV fail safe behaviour, i.e. no drive to a safe position rather than fail-open or fail-close by itself. Fail-safe requires a mechanical spring-return actuator (battery-free, SIL 3 capable) or a battery / super-capacitor backup. Fail-close (FC) or fail-open (FO) is set at the order stage and cannot be reversed in the field for spring-return units.

Torque / thrust limit. Size to the peak value across the full stroke, not the catalogue breakaway number. Apply a service factor of 1.2–1.25 for clean liquids, 1.3–1.35 for dry gas, wet steam or clean air, and 1.5–2.0 for abrasive slurry or high-temperature service. The output must stay within the valve's Maximum Allowable Stem Torque (MAST) so the stem cannot twist during an unseating event. Multi-turn valves are rated by thrust (kN); quarter-turn by torque (N·m).

Mid-position holding. A rigid gear train holds any setpoint regardless of line-pressure swing - the basis for modulating control. On-off accuracy is about ±5%; modulating with 4–20 mA is about ±0.5%.

Electric actuator duty classification per EN 15714-2 (with IEC 60034-1 duty)
Class Control mode Duty (IEC 60034-1) Typical application
Class A On-off S2 short-time, 15 min Isolation, ESD
Class B Inching / positioning S3 intermittent, 25% ED Coarse flow balancing, tank filling
Class C Modulating S4 continuous, 50% ED Process control loops
Class D Modulating S4 continuous, 100% ED Severe modulating service

Four evidence levels - state them correctly on the order. Designed to a standard (drawing intent); tested to (each valve hydrostatically and seat-tested per ISO 5208); type tested (a design proof that does not cover every unit); and API Monogram marked (only by a licensed manufacturer). A type-test certificate is not proof that an individual valve passed.

When to switch to a different actuator. The MOV vs pneumatic decision is settled by fail-safe speed, power and duty: use pneumatic or hydraulic when the application needs second-scale ESD with mechanical fail-safe, has no reliable power, runs hundreds of starts per hour (electric S4 has thermal limits), or sits in a hazardous area with no certified electric path. Electric wins on infrastructure, positioning accuracy and remote sites with power.

FAQ

What is a motor operated valve?

A motor operated valve (MOV) is a complete valve package: a gate, globe, ball or butterfly valve driven by an electric actuator instead of a handwheel, gearbox or air cylinder. The electric motor, gear train, limit and torque switches and control electronics are the operating element; the valve body only provides the isolation. An MOV lets one operator open or close many valves from a control room via a 4-20 mA signal or fieldbus.

How does a motor operated valve differ from a pneumatic actuator?

An electric MOV needs only a power and signal cable and holds any mid-position rigidly with no air supply, which suits remote sites and precise modulating control. A pneumatic actuator needs instrument air and a compressor train, but it actuates in seconds and fails safe mechanically with a spring. Choose pneumatic when you need second-scale ESD, have no reliable power, or run hundreds of cycles per hour; choose electric when power is available and you want low infrastructure and tight positioning.

What happens to an MOV when power fails?

A standard electric actuator has no stored energy, so on power loss it stays in its last position (stay put). It does NOT automatically go fail-open or fail-close. If the process requires the valve to drive to a safe position on power loss, specify fail-close (FC) or fail-open (FO) using a mechanical spring-return actuator (battery-free, SIL 3 capable) or a battery/super-capacitor backup. The fail direction is set at the order stage and cannot be reversed in the field for spring-return units.

How do you size the actuator torque for an MOV?

Size to the peak torque or thrust the valve needs across the full stroke, not the catalogue breakaway value alone. Add a service factor of 1.2-1.25 for clean liquids, 1.3-1.35 for dry gas, wet steam or clean air, and 1.5-2.0 for abrasive slurry or high-temperature service. The selected output must stay within the valve's Maximum Allowable Stem Torque (MAST) so the stem cannot twist during an unseating event. Multi-turn valves (gate, globe) are rated by thrust in kN; quarter-turn valves (ball, butterfly) by torque in N·m.

What seat leakage rate applies to an MOV?

MOV seat leakage is specified to ISO 5208, not to a control-valve class. A soft-seated valve (PTFE/RTFE) is always Rate A - zero visible leakage. A general metal-seated isolation valve is normally Rate D, allowing 0.1 x DN mm3/s of liquid (e.g. about 10-12 drops/min at DN 100). High-temperature or precision metal seats target Rate C (0.03 x DN) or Rate B (0.01 x DN). Writing 'Class VI per API 598' on an isolation MOV is incorrect: that belongs to the ANSI/FCI 70-2 control-valve system.

What does EN 15714-2 Class A, B, C or D mean for an electric actuator?

EN 15714-2 classifies electric valve actuators by duty. Class A is on-off (short-time duty S2, 15 min) for isolation and ESD. Class B is inching/positioning (intermittent S3, 25% ED) for coarse balancing. Class C and Class D are modulating (continuous S4 duty, 50% and 100% ED) for control loops. Fitting a Class A on-off unit on a modulating loop causes thermal trips and premature burnout, so the class must match the control mode.

Can an MOV be used for modulating (throttling) control?

Yes, with a modulating actuator and a compatible valve. Use a globe or characterized ball/butterfly valve, an EN 15714-2 Class C/D actuator, and a 4-20 mA (or fieldbus) positioner giving roughly +/-0.5% positioning accuracy versus +/-5% for on-off. The valve must tolerate throttling flow; a hard-seat gate valve should not be used for continuous throttling.

What is the maximum size and pressure an MOV can handle?

GNEE supplies MOVs from DN 15 to DN 1200 (1/2 in to 48 in) and PN 10 to PN 160 / Class 150 to Class 900, limited by valve type. Large diameters and high classes are typically butterfly or ball valves; high-pressure gate and globe valves are common up to Class 600-900. The exact envelope is set by the valve product standard (API 600/602/623/608/609) and the ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature rating.

Does an MOV need a separate controller?

On-off units need only a two-wire open/close signal and use built-in limit switches for position feedback. Modulating units need a 4-20 mA command and a positioner, but this is normally integrated in the actuator local controls; no separate PLC is required for a single valve. For plant-wide control, the actuator connects to the existing DCS/PLC via 4-20 mA, Modbus RTU, Profibus DP, Foundation Fieldbus or HART.

What flange and actuator mounting standards apply to an MOV?

Valve ends follow ASME B16.5 (up to NPS 24) or B16.47 (NPS 26 and above) and face-to-face per ASME B16.10; EN 1092-1 is available. The actuator mounts to the valve stem flange per ISO 5211 (quarter-turn) or ISO 5210 (multi-turn), with F07-F16 part-turn and F10-F30 multi-turn interfaces, so actuators and valves from different makers stay interchangeable.

Can an MOV provide double block and bleed (DBB)?

A single ball or plug MOV with a DBB seat design can block pressure from both sides and vent the cavity, supporting a single-valve DBB isolation. For a positive double-isolation with a bleed, use two series block valves or a purpose-built DBB valve rather than relying on one standard gate MOV. Specify DBB, cavity relief and bleed port requirements explicitly on the order.

What documents and test reports come with an MOV?

Every valve is hydrostatically shell-tested and seat-tested per ISO 5208 (or API 598 / EN 12266-1) and ships with an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate and a pressure-test report. The actuator is torque- and limit-switch calibrated before dispatch. Third-party inspection by SGS, TUV or BV is available on request, and full material traceability is provided.

What is the MOQ and lead time for an MOV?

Minimum order is 1 set, including a prototype. Stock actuators matched with stock valves ship in 7-15 working days; an engineered package (special flange drilling, exotic alloy, SIL/ATEX, spring-return fail-safe) takes 20-35 days. Warranty is 18 months on the actuator and 12 months on the valve body from shipment. Payment is T/T 30% deposit or L/C at sight.

Do you offer OEM/ODM and custom flange drilling for MOVs?

Yes. GNEE supplies OEM/ODM MOVs with custom flange drilling (ANSI 150/300, DIN PN10/16, JIS 10K), tailored actuator brackets and private-label marking. A free 3D design review is provided within 48 hours to confirm the valve-actuator interface before production.
