What is the difference between API 6A and 6D

Mar 23, 2026 Leave a message

API 6D, titled "Specification for Pipeline and Piping Valves," is the industry's go-to for the transportation of fluids. These valves are used in long-distance pipelines, compressor stations, and manifolds.

Stop Sourcing the Wrong Valve: Why API 6D is Mandatory for Midstream Pipelines.

API 6D Valve Parameters

ParameterSpecification / Range
Valve TypesBall, Gate (Slab/Expanding), Check, Plug
Pressure ClassesASME Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, 2500
Size RangeNPS 2" to NPS 60"
Temperature RangeTypically -46°C to 121°C (Standard)
Testing StandardAPI 6D (Hydraulic Shell & Seat)

Applications of API 6D Valves

The design goal of API 6D valves is "safe and reliable long-distance isolation". Its applications mainly focus on the following scenarios:
Mainline Transmission for crude oil and natural gas
This is the most important application. Valves are installed on hundreds of kilometers of pipelines to cut off specific pipe sections during maintenance or accidents.
Key requirements: Must be resistant to atmospheric corrosion (buried installation) and must support the passage of cleaning equipment.
Compressor&Pumping Stations
API 6D valves are used to control the fluid entering the compressor or pump at the pressurization stations set every few tens of kilometers in the pipeline.
Key requirements: reliability of high-frequency operation and extremely high sealing level.
Pressure regulating and regulating stations
Used for cutting off before and after handover measurement and pressure regulation.
Key requirement: Double Block Double Row (DBB) function to verify valve tightness without shutting down the system.
Tank Farms&Terminals
Used for the diversion and isolation of different media at the inlet and outlet of large oil storage tanks.
Key requirement: Fire safety certification (API 607/6FA).
Offshore Risers
The key node connecting the submarine pipeline and the offshore platform.
Key requirements: withstand extremely high external pressure and seawater corrosion.

API 6A, titled "Specification for Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment," is designed for the high-pressure, high-risk environment at the surface of an oil or gas well. These valves are built for containment and extreme durability.

API 6A Valve Parameters

ParameterSpecification / Range
Valve TypesSlab Gate Valves, Choke Valves, Check Valves
Pressure Ratings2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 PSI
Size Range1 13/16" to 11" (Typical)
Temperature ClassesL, P, R, S, T, U, V (-60°C to 121°C+)
Testing StandardAPI 6A (Hydrostatic and Gas Testing)

Core Applications of API 6A Valves

The application of API 6A valves focuses on the "first line of defense from formation to surface":
1. Christmas Tree for Oil and Gas Production
Installed at the top of the wellhead to control the production of oil and gas wells.
Application: Master Valve, Wing Valve, and Choke Valve work together to regulate production pressure and flow rate.
2. Wellhead Assembly
Used for hanging oil pipes and casings, and sealing the annulus between each layer of tubing.
Application: Installed on the casing head for monitoring annular pressure.
3. Fracturing manifolds
In shale oil and gas development, high-pressure abrasive fluids discharged from multiple fracturing trucks accumulate here.
Application: The valve must be able to withstand extremely high flow rates and severe erosion from proppant (sand).
4. Production Increase and Water Injection Operations (EOR&Water Injection)
In order to increase the production of old wells, it is necessary to inject high-pressure water or carbon dioxide into the well
Application: Valves need to have extremely strong corrosion resistance (usually requiring material grades of EE, FF, or HH).

FAQ

What is the ISO equivalent of API 6A?

ISO 10423

ISO 10423 (API 6A) – International Standard for Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries.

What is an API 6D valve?

API 6D (Pipeline Valves): This standard primarily focuses on pipeline valves, which include gate, plug, and ball valves. These valves are specifically designed to transmit and distribute oil, gas, and other hydrocarbons in pipeline systems.
