Cryogenic Globe Valve

Oct 21, 2026 Leave a message

A cryogenic globe valve is a single-seat valve built to BS 1873 and BS 6364 for service down to -196 °C. Use it when flow has to be set rather than only stopped: pump discharge, tank fill and drain, and let-down stations on LNG, LPG and air separation plants. Size and class do not move independently: Class 1500 ends at NPS 4, and NPS 18 is 300 at most.

Specifications

The range below is what the shop quotes from existing patterns; anything outside it is a new pattern, which moves tooling cost and lead time before it moves unit price.

Supply range and governing standards
Parameter Range or value Standard or note
Design standard BS 1873, ASME B16.34 API 623 for flanged steel globe valves
Cryogenic standard BS 6364, ISO 28921-1:2022 Extension length and test sequence

Flow direction Under the seat as standard Arrow cast on the body; not reversible in the field
Seat leakage ISO 5208 Rate D metal seat Rate A only with a soft insert
Marking MSS SP-25 Grade, class, size, heat number, minimum temperature

Temperature Bands and Body Material

Five impact test temperatures cover the range, and each belongs to a grade rather than a valve type. The trap is that a throttling valve does not see the pipeline temperature: the body metal follows the fluid after the seat, not the line design figure on the datasheet.

Body grades, impact test temperatures and where each one is used
Grade UNS Impact test Service band Typical duty
A352 LCB J03303 -46 °C -29 to -46 °C LPG and ammonia transfer
A352 LCC J02505 -46 °C -29 to -46 °C LPG spheres, propylene
A352 LC1 J12522 -59 °C -46 to -59 °C Cold separation, CO2 plants
A352 LC2 J22500 -73 °C -59 to -73 °C Ethylene and propylene refrigeration
A352 LC3 J31550 -101 °C -73 to -101 °C Ethylene let-down, LNG boil-off
A351 CF8M J92900 -196 °C -101 to -196 °C LNG, liquid nitrogen, oxygen
A182 F316 S31600 -196 °C -101 to -196 °C Small-bore forged bodies

A let-down station makes the choice twice. LNG entering at 40 bar and leaving at 5 bar is colder after the seat than before it, so the grade is set by the lowest metal temperature downstream, not by the tank temperature upstream.

Below -29 °C the class table gives no higher rating as the metal gets colder: ASME B16.34 clause 2.3.2 caps a rating below -29 °C at the -29 °C value. What changes below that line is the impact test obligation, not the bar figure.

design features

1. Extended bonnet to minimize the heat conduction & transfer from the cold zone and keep the stem packing free of cold formation for providing a secure seal.
2. Drip plate fitting to minimize ice accumulation on the extension and prevent possible damage to insulation.
3. Fugitive Emission packing design.
4. Hard-faced seat/disc for preventing wear and improving durability.
5.Cavity pressure relief design to prevent excessive pressure rise in cavity.
6. Low torque design.
7. Optional non-metallic material for sealing face.
8. Tapered disc design.

Body Patterns: Straight, Y and Angle

Three patterns cover the same size range and differ only in the flow path, which is the one thing that changes pressure drop in a globe body. Straight pattern is the reference point.

Body pattern, flow path and where each one belongs
Pattern Size range Flow path Pressure drop Pigging Where used
Straight (T-pattern) NPS 1/2-24 S-shaped: in, up through the seat, out Highest of the three Not possible General isolation and throttling, NPS 2 and below
Y-pattern NPS 2-24 Stem set at about 45° to the run, bore nearly straight Lower than straight pattern Not possible Pump discharge, cold boxes, lines where the drop is budgeted
Angle NPS 2-16 Inlet and outlet at 90°, seat at the corner Lower than straight pattern, one elbow saved Not possible Cold box corners, vessel nozzles, LNG send-out skids

Y-pattern is the usual answer above NPS 4, where a straight body would carry the whole drop. Which pattern fits a skid is a layout question; the drop is not.

FAQ

What is a cryogenic globe valve used for?

Flow control on cold lines rather than isolation alone: pump discharge, tank fill and drain, let-down and bypass on LNG, LPG, air separation and liquid nitrogen systems. The single seat and short stroke let it hold a position, which a gate valve cannot do without wearing its wedge.

Can it be used to throttle at -196 °C?

Yes, with a hard-faced seat ring and a plug profile chosen for the drop, and with the body grade set by the temperature after the seat. Throttling cools the fluid downstream, so a valve on a -160 °C line can still see a lower metal temperature.

Which way should the flow go?

Under the seat as standard, with the arrow pointing away from the tank on a fill or drain line so liquid stays trapped below the seat when closed. The packing then sits on the downstream side.

Is a globe valve tighter than a gate valve at low temperature?

Both are metal-seated and both are quoted to ISO 5208 Rate D unless a soft insert is used. The difference is the seating mechanism: the globe plug is held by stem load on one seat, the gate wedge is driven between two.

What do you need to quote a cryogenic globe valve?

Four figures: size and class, design minimum temperature, fluid, and whether the valve throttles or only isolates. Pattern, plug profile, extension length, leakage and torque come back with the drawing.
