What is trunnion mounted ball valve parts

Jan 22, 2026 Leave a message

A trunnion ball valve is a type of valve that uses a rotating ball as its core control element. The flow of media is controlled by the contact or separation of the ball and the valve seat. The "trunnion" in its name refers to the support shaft structure located on both sides of the ball. This design gives it unique advantages in high-pressure, large-diameter, and complex operating conditions, making it a key piece of equipment in industrial fluid control. GNEE Group manufactures trunnion ball valves suitable for various industrial applications. Send drawings for a quote.

Parts of trunnion ball valve

The core components of a trunnion-type ball valve include the ball, trunnion, seat, stem, and body:

Ball: The ball surface is machined with a circular through-hole, the diameter of which matches the pipe's inner diameter, ensuring minimal fluid resistance when fully open. The ball is typically made of stainless steel, carbon steel, or a corrosion-resistant alloy to suit different media requirements.

Trunnions: The trunnions, which are symmetrically arranged on both sides of the ball, are connected to the valve body through bearings to form a fixed structure. The trunnion not only restricts the ball's axial displacement but also reduces operating torque through rigid support, allowing the valve to open and close easily under high pressure.

Seat: The seat employs a spring-loaded design, automatically compensating for wear and maintaining sealing pressure. Some high-end models have lubrication ports around the seat, allowing lubricant injection to reduce friction during closure and extend service life.

Valve stem: The valve stem is connected to the trunnion by a key and transmits the rotational torque of the drive device (manual, pneumatic or electric). The stem seal uses a stuffing box structure, combined with the spring-loaded design, to effectively prevent media leakage.

Valve body: The valve body is typically a one-piece cast or forged structure, with the material matching the ball to ensure pressure resistance. Its internal flow channel design is optimized to reduce fluid turbulence and lower pressure drop.

trunnion ball valve Features

Truncate Design

The trunnion structure ensures more stable ball rotation, reduces friction, and extends service life.

Suitable for high-pressure applications, providing excellent sealing performance and preventing media leakage.

High-Performance Materials

The valve body and ball are typically made of corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel and alloy steel, adapting to harsh media environments.

Sealing materials include PTFE, PPL, and hard alloys to meet diverse operating requirements.

Bidirectional Sealing

The fixed ball design achieves bidirectional zero leakage, ensuring system safety.

Low Operating Torque

The automatic pre-tightening design of the valve seat reduces the torque required for opening and closing, facilitating operation.

Long Service Life and Low Maintenance

Precision machining and high-quality materials ensure long-term stable valve operation, reducing maintenance costs.

trunnion ball valve Technical Advantages

Pressure and Temperature Resistance

Nominal pressure ranges from 150LB to 2500LB, and temperature ranges from -196℃ to +600℃, adapting to extreme operating conditions.

Sealing Performance

Soft seals (such as PTFE) are suitable for low-temperature and low-pressure conditions, while hard seals (such as hard alloys) are suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments.

Low Fluid Resistance

Full-bore design minimizes fluid resistance, reducing energy consumption.

Quick Opening and Closing

Switching can be completed with a 90° rotation, providing a fast response time suitable for emergency shut-off scenarios.

Customization Services

Customization of materials, dimensions, and connection methods (such as flanges, threads, and ferrules) is supported to meet individual needs.

Applications:

  • Petrochemical Industry: High-pressure oil and gas control in pyrolysis furnaces (pressure resistance ≥70MPa), acidic media transportation.
  • Power Energy: Steam pipelines in thermal power plants, valves in cooling systems of nuclear power plants.
  • Environmental Engineering: Wastewater treatment, interception of particulate-containing waste gas.
  • Metallurgical Industry: Molten metal flow regulation, high-temperature flue gas emission.
