What is the life of a cast iron three-way ball valve

1. Basic life range
‌Conventional working conditions‌

Under non-corrosive media, medium and low pressure (PN≤6.4MPa) and normal temperature (-10~80℃), the typical life of cast iron three-way ball valve is ‌8-10 years‌, which mainly depends on the pressure resistance of cast iron material and the stability of sealing structure;
If high-quality casting process (such as precision sand casting) is adopted and the valve body has no sand hole defects, the service life can be extended to more than 12 years.
‌Special scenario comparison‌

In harsh working conditions such as nuclear power plants, the design life of similar cast iron valves can reach 30-40 years, but they need to be matched with high-strength sealing materials (such as cemented carbide) and regular maintenance;
In ordinary industrial scenarios, the life of three-way ball valves is usually lower than that of nuclear power plant specifications, but the integrated structural design (such as flow channel optimization) can significantly improve durability.
2. Key influencing factors
‌Material and process‌
‌Cast iron quality‌: High-grade cast iron with a carbon content of ≤3.5% and impurities of ≤0.1% can delay corrosion and wear, and its service life is more than 30% longer than that of inferior materials;
‌Seal configuration‌: Hard seals (such as stainless steel/tungsten carbide) usually have a service life 2-3 times longer than soft seals (such as PTFE), but they need to be combined with precision grinding technology (roughness Ra≤0.4μm).
‌Working conditions‌
‌Medium characteristics‌: Strong acid (pH<4) and particle-containing media will accelerate valve body corrosion or sealing surface wear, and the service life may be shortened to 3-5 years; ‌Pressure fluctuation‌: Frequent pressure shocks (such as ΔP≥5MPa/minute) are prone to cause micro cracks in the valve body, and the strength needs to be verified in advance through a water pressure test (1.5 times the nominal pressure).
‌Maintenance strategy‌

‌Regular inspection‌: Check the sealing surface wear, valve stem lubrication and bolt tightening status every 6 months, which can extend the service life by 20%-30%;
‌Corrosion protection‌: Hot-dip galvanizing or epoxy coating treatment can increase the service life in a humid environment from 5 years to more than 8 years.
3. Life extension plan
‌Selection optimization‌

Preferably select models with valve body wall thickness ≥8mm and sealing surface hardness ≥HRC50, which are suitable for high wear scenarios containing mud and sand;
In high temperature (>150℃) working conditions, it is recommended to use alloy steel valve body or add heat dissipation structure.
‌Operation specification‌

Avoid long-term use of the valve in a half-open state to prevent local erosion of the sealing surface by the medium;
The opening and closing torque must be controlled within the design value (such as DN50 valve ≤40N·m), and over-limit operation will accelerate the failure of the seal.
Maintenance and replacement recommendations
Replacement threshold: Immediate replacement is required when cracks are visible on the valve body, the wear depth of the sealing surface is greater than 0.3mm, or the leakage rate is greater than 5% of the rated flow rate;
Spare parts reserve: It is recommended to reserve wearing parts such as sealing rings and valve stems to shorten the maintenance cycle (usually replacement can be completed within 48 hours)
