What is the function of sluice gate valve

Jun 04, 2025 Leave a message

Sluice gate valve in the water conservancy project to assume the core control function, its role can be systematically summarised as follows:

 The core function of water flow control
Cut off and conduction of water flow
The gate valve completely cuts off or channels the water flow channel through the vertically lifting gate plate, realising the absolute control of water flow by water conservancy facilities (fully open/closed state).
Precise water level adjustment
In scenarios such as ship locks, the water level in the lock chamber is accurately adjusted by controlling the opening and closing of the gate valve to ensure the smooth passage of ships (water level difference control accuracy up to centimetre level).

 Key role of engineering safety

Applications‌ Mechanism of action‌
Flood control and drainage‌ Emergency opening of floodgate valve to divert excess flood water and reduce the pressure of the main stream (e.g. floodgate instantaneous flood discharge capacity ≥1000m³/s)
Protect against moisture and salt‌ Tide gate valve to block seawater backflow, protect estuarine freshwater resources (closed gate seal pressure ≥ 0.5MPa)
‌Equipment protection‌ Emergency discharge of water from sluice valves to prevent overpressure damming of channels/reservoirs (response time <10 minutes)

 Technical characteristics and limitations
Structural advantages
Extremely small flow resistance (channel straight-through design, resistance coefficient ≤ 0.1);
Bidirectional sealing (the medium can be cut off from any direction).
Use restrictions
Only fully open / fully closed: can not regulate the flow, throttling operation is easy to damage the sealing surface;
Difficult maintenance: sealing surface erosion after the need to replace the whole, high maintenance costs
