API 598 Valve Inspection and Testing. This standard covers the inspection, supplementary inspection, and pressure testing requirements for resilient-seat and metal-to-metal seated gate valves, globe valves, plug valves, ball valves, check valves, and butterfly valves. It relates to the buyer's inspection and any supplementary inspections the buyer may require at the valve manufacturer's facility.

 

API 607 ​​Fire Testing of Soft-Seat Right-Angle Rotary Valves. This standard covers the requirements for testing and evaluating the performance of straight-through soft-seat right-angle rotary valves when exposed to certain fire conditions defined in this standard. The procedures described in this standard apply to all classes and sizes of such valves made from materials listed in ASME B16.34.

 

1. Standard Nature and Scope

API 598: Full name "Valves Inspection and Testing," is a general inspection standard applicable to various valve types, including gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, and check valves. It specifies the inspection requirements for valves from raw materials to finished products, such as dimensional accuracy and appearance defects.

API 607: Officially titled "Fire Resistance Testing of Soft-Seat Valves," this is a specific fire resistance standard primarily testing the fire resistance of soft-seat valves (such as ball valves and butterfly valves). It requires that the leakage rate of the valve not exceed 40 cm³/min within 30 minutes after a fire.

 

2. Core Content Differences

API 598:

Inspection Process: Includes in-factory inspection (e.g., valve body and cover dimension measurement) and out-of-factory inspection (e.g., transport condition inspection).

Pressure Testing: Covers high-pressure sealing tests and high-pressure pneumatic shell tests to ensure the valve's sealing performance and strength under high pressure.

API 607:

Fire Resistance Testing: Verifies the valve's sealing performance after a fire through a 30-minute fire test.

Fire-Resistant Structure: Requires the valve to maintain a metal-to-metal seal after the seals are burned, preventing media leakage.

 

3. Application Scenarios

API 598: Suitable for industries with stringent valve quality requirements, such as oil and gas, ensuring valve reliability under extreme conditions such as high pressure and corrosion.

API 607: Primarily used in high-fire-risk fields such as LNG and chemical industries, ensuring valve safety in fire situations.
