What are 3-way ball valves used for

Jan 29, 2026 Leave a message

A three-way ball valve is a type of valve device primarily used as an opening and closing element, where the rotation of a ball achieves the opening and closing function. It comes in two types: T-type and L-type. The T-type can connect or disconnect three orthogonal pipes, enabling flow splitting or merging; the L-type can only connect two orthogonal pipes, serving a distribution function.

3-way ball valves Types

  • T-type three-way ball valve: The ball passage is T-shaped, allowing simultaneous diversion, merging, or switching of media flow direction, such as A→B + C, B→A + C, etc., without additional piping configuration, simplifying system design.
  • L-type three-way ball valve: The ball passage is at a right angle (90°), allowing for switching of two media streams, such as A→B or A→C. It can only connect two mutually orthogonal pipelines and cannot simultaneously maintain communication with a third pipeline; it only serves a distribution function.

3-way ball valves Working Principle

The working principle of the three-way ball valve is mainly based on its unique structure and operation:

Ball and Seat: The core component of the three-way ball valve is a ball with three passages, each connecting to one of the three pipelines. A sealing surface is formed between the ball and the seat, ensuring that the valve prevents media leakage when closed.

Stem and Actuation Mechanism: The stem is connected to the ball; rotating the stem rotates the ball. The actuation mechanism (such as a handwheel, electric actuator, etc.) drives the stem rotation.

Opening and Closing Process:

To open, rotate the handwheel counterclockwise (or activate the electric actuator). The valve stem moves in the opposite direction, and its bottom angular plane disengages the ball from the valve seat. The valve stem continues to rise and interacts with the guide pin in the valve stem's spiral groove, causing the ball to begin rotating without friction until it reaches the fully open position.

To close, rotate the handwheel clockwise (or deactivate the electric actuator). The valve stem begins to descend, causing the ball to leave the valve seat and begin rotating. Continuing to rotate the handwheel, the valve stem is acted upon by the guide pin embedded in its spiral groove, causing the valve stem and ball to rotate simultaneously by 90°. Near the close, the ball has rotated 90° without contacting the valve seat. The last few rotations of the handwheel mechanically wedge the angular plane at the bottom of the valve stem against the ball, pressing it tightly against the valve seat, achieving a complete seal.

3-way ball valves Structural Features

The integrated structure features a four-sided valve seat sealing design, flange connection, high reliability, and a lightweight design.

  • Excellent sealing performance: The sealing surfaces between the ball and the valve seat are precision-machined to ensure a good seal.
  • Quick opening and closing: Opening or closing is completed with a 90° rotation of the ball, making operation simple and quick.
  • Long service life: The three-way ball valve has a long service life, high flow capacity, and low resistance.

3-way ball valves Applications

Due to their unique structure and excellent performance, three-way ball valves are widely used in various industrial fields, including but not limited to:

  • Petroleum Industry: Used to control the flow and distribution of media such as oil and natural gas.
  • Chemical Industry: In chemical production, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of various acidic, alkaline, and corrosive media.
  • Metallurgical Industry: In the smelting processes of iron and steel and non-ferrous metals, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of high-temperature media.
  • Power Industry: In thermal power plants, three-way ball valves can be used to control the flow and distribution of media such as steam and water.
  • Other Industries: Three-way ball valves also play an important role in process pipelines in industries such as light industry, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, papermaking, and air conditioning.
