V port vs full port ball valve

Mar 30, 2026 Leave a message

The biggest difference between V-type ball valves and full-bore ball valves lies in their functions. V-type ball valves are designed for precise flow regulation and handling of complex media, and have shearing and regulating capabilities; full-bore ball valves, on the other hand, focus on achieving full flow passage and rapid shut-off of fluids, and are characterized by low flow resistance and pigging functions.

A V-type ball valve is a regulating valve with a V-shaped notch on its ball. By rotating the ball, the opening area is changed, achieving continuous and precise flow control. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring a high turntable ratio (up to 100:1 to 300:1). In addition to regulating flow, its V-shaped notch also shears impurities such as fibers and particles when closed, preventing blockages. It is suitable for media containing slurries or small solid particles.

A full-bore ball valve is a shut-off valve. Its ball's through-hole diameter is essentially the same as the pipe's inner diameter. In the fully open state, fluid flows through almost unimpeded, minimizing pressure loss. It is mainly used in applications requiring high flow rates or for pipeline cleaning operations.

FAQ

How does a V ball valve work?

As the ball is rotated within the valve body, the V-notch aligns with the flow path, allowing for precise control of the flow rate. The V-notch design provides a linear flow characteristic, meaning that the flow rate is directly proportional to the angle of rotation of the ball.

What is a full ball valve?

Sometimes called "full bore," a full port ball valve is a special valve design that allows for unrestricted flow when the valve is opened. Full port valves have larger bodies than standard valves. This larger body houses a larger ball and larger opening inside.
