A soft-seal flanged butterfly valve is a type of valve where the closing element (butterfly plate) is a disc that rotates around the valve stem to open and close. It primarily functions as a shut-off and throttling valve in pipelines. The butterfly plate is driven by the valve stem; a 90° rotation completes one opening and closing cycle. Changing the deflection angle of the butterfly plate controls the flow rate of the medium.
Common butterfly valves include wafer-type butterfly valves, lug-type butterfly valves, and flanged butterfly valves.
