- Standard Positioning and Applications
API 6D: Valve standard designed specifically for oil and gas long-distance pipelines, covering ball valves, gate valves and other types of pipeline valves, with an emphasis on pipeline system integration and pipeline cleaning operations compatibility.
API 600: steel wedge gate valve standard for the oil and gas industry general scenarios (such as refineries, chemical plants), focusing on the reliability of high temperature and high pressure conditions.
- The structural design differences
Gate type
API 600: mandatory use of wedge type single gate (rigid or elastic wedge) to ensure high pressure sealing.
API 6D: allows flat plate gate valve, double gate or resilient gate and other structures to adapt to pipeline clearing needs.
Access requirements
API 6D: Strictly full access design (same diameter as the pipeline) to reduce fluid resistance and support the passage of pipe cleaners.
API 600: Although usually full bore, but allows the design of reduced diameter (need special marking).
Expanded functionality
API 6D: Dual cut-off blowdown (DBB) function is mandatory to allow safe venting of cavity media when the valve is closed.
API 600: No DBB function mandatory.

- Sealing and Material Requirements
Sealing surface treatment:
API 600 requires the valve seat sealing surface to be surfaced with hard alloy (e.g. Stellite alloy) to enhance wear resistance.
API 6D sealing surface material is not mandatory surfacing alloy, but to meet the medium corrosion requirements.
Valve body structure:
API 600 valves in the flange using double-head bolts, easy maintenance and disassembly.
API 6D pays more attention to the overall casting process, emphasising the quality of precision casting of pressure-bearing parts6.
- Application scenarios to distinguish
API 6D: applicable to long-distance pipeline, gathering system API 6D: suitable for long-distance pipeline, gathering system, especially the pipeline to be cleaned, and adapt to the buried installation environment.
API 600: mainly used in refining units, high temperature and high pressure process pipelines (such as steam, oil), focusing on internal plant reliability.
- Testing and certification
Common test: both implement API 598 sealing test and API 607 fire test.
Special requirements: API 6D valves need to verify the effectiveness of the DBB function, while API 600 pays more attention to high-temperature and high-pressure cycle life.
- To summarise
selection logic:
Priority API 6D: Oil and gas transmission lines requiring pipe cleaning, full bore, buried;
Priority API 600: High-temperature, high-pressure, frequently opening and closing industrial plant pipelines (e.g., refinery reactor). industrial plant pipelines (e.g., refinery reactor outlets)
