The opening and closing member of an API 600 cast steel gate valve is the gate. The movement direction of the gate is perpendicular to the direction of the fluid. The gate valve can only be fully open or fully closed; it cannot be used for regulating or throttling. The gate has two sealing surfaces, and the most commonly used type of gate valve has these two sealing surfaces forming a wedge. The wedge angle varies with the valve parameters, usually around 5°, but for medium temperatures, it is typically 2° 52'.
