What is API 594 standard?
API 594-2022 not only details the specific requirements for gray cast iron, double-plate, steel, and alloy single-plate and double-plate check valves in terms of design, material selection, structural dimensions, pressure and temperature resistance, but also further clarifies the inspection and testing specifications. Furthermore, the standard also provides clear regulations on check valve connection methods, such as flange connections, threaded connections, and welded connections.
This standard also applies to Type A and Type B check valves. Specifically, Type A check valves, i.e., short-face contact type, are commonly used in applications with shorter structural lengths, such as wafer or flanged check valves; while Type B check valves, i.e., long-face contact type, are more suitable for applications with longer structural lengths, such as weld neck check valves.
Design and Material Requirements: The design of check valves must comply with API 594. Meanwhile, the design of connecting flanges can refer to standards such as ASME B16.11 and ASME B16.15. Regarding material selection, API 594 offers a wide range of options, covering gray cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and various alloy materials.
Structure and Connection Methods
Wafer check valves are known for their compact structure and streamlined length, making them ideal for industrial piping systems.
Flanged check valves utilize a flange connection, a design particularly suitable for applications requiring connection to flanged piping systems.
Lumbered check valves, with their unique lug connection, meet the installation requirements of specific operating conditions.
Welded check valves, with their welded connection, are particularly suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure operating environments.
Pressure-Temperature Ratings
The pressure-temperature ratings of a check valve are a critical standard ensuring its stable operation under various conditions. These ratings are strictly defined to ensure the check valve can adapt to different working environments.
Inspection and Testing
Check valves must undergo rigorous inspection and testing according to API 594 standards to verify their performance compliance. These tests cover industry standards such as API 598 and ASME B16.10.
