1. Definition and standard basis
API 6D ball valves are ball valves designed in accordance with API 6D standard (Pipeline and Pipeline Valve Code), specialised in oil, gas and other industrial pipeline systems, covering the design, manufacture and testing of the entire process requirements.

2. Core application areas
Oil and gas transmission: for long-distance pipelines, gathering pipelines and high-pressure, highly corrosive conditions (such as hydrogen sulfide environment).
Chemical and energy: liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and transportation, refinery and chemical plant and other scenes.
3. Structure and design features
Calibre range: usually NPS 4 to 60, with large calibre (10 inches and above) predominant.
Connections: flanged, welded or threaded ends to suit piping system installation requirements.
Full bore design: Reduces fluid resistance, reduces pressure drop, and ensures efficient delivery.
4. Material and Performance Requirements
Material selection:
Valve body: corrosion resistant stainless steel (e.g. ASTM A351 CF8M), alloy steel (e.g. ASTM A182 F11).
Seal: metal hard seal or soft seal (such as PTFE), adapt to high temperature, high pressure and impurity-containing media.
Sulfur resistance: For environments containing hydrogen sulfide, NACE MR0175 is required to prevent stress corrosion cracking.
5. Testing and Certification
Pressure test:
Shell strength test: ≥1.5 times the nominal pressure.
Seal test: ≥1.1 times nominal pressure to ensure no leakage.
Fire test: API 607/6FA fire test (sealing after 30 minutes flame exposure) is required.
6. Differences with similar standards
API 6D vs:
API 6D: For pipeline systems, focusing on large diameters, high pressures and long operating cycles.
API 608: For metal ball valves for general industrial use, with smaller calibre (usually ≤ NPS 24) and relatively simplified test requirements.
Summary
API 6D ball valves are key control devices for pipeline systems in the oil and gas industry. The API 6D standard is the core, combined with material properties, full bore design and rigorous testing to ensure their safety and reliability under high pressure, corrosive and extreme environments.
