What is the difference between API 6A and API 6D valves

API 6A and API 6D are two key valve standards in the oil and gas industry. The core differences are reflected in the applicable scenarios, technical specifications and performance requirements:

 Differences in applicable scenarios‌
‌API 6A‌
Specially used for ‌wellhead and Christmas tree equipment‌, covering high-pressure valves (such as gate valves, throttle valves, and safety valves) in drilling, completion and production. Applicable to extreme working conditions (high pressure, sulfur-containing media) such as wellhead equipment and blowout preventer groups.
‌API 6D‌
For ‌long-distance pipeline systems‌, it regulates the design and manufacture of ball valves, gate valves, plug valves and check valves, and is applicable to oil and gas transmission trunk lines, stations and other scenarios.
 Technical specification focus‌
‌API 6A‌:
Emphasis on ‌resistance to hydrogen sulfide corrosion (H₂S environment)‌, requiring materials to pass NACE MR0175 standard certification.

Specifies ‌fire resistance‌ (such as API 6FA test) to ensure valve sealing integrity under fire.
Covers wellhead-specific valve types (such as Christmas tree valves and casing heads).
‌API 6D‌:
Focus on full-bore design (reduced flow resistance) and bidirectional sealing capabilities to adapt to pipeline cleaning operations.
Added valve repair specifications (Appendix A of the 25th edition) and bolt material upgrade requirements.
 Pressure rating and test differences‌ ‌Pressure range‌ ‌API 6A valve pressure ratings are usually higher (such as 15,000 psi and above) to adapt to ultra-high pressure at the wellhead.
API 6D focuses on conventional pipeline pressures (such as Class 150~2500), but large-diameter valves must pass a 30-minute shell test.
‌Test requirements‌ ‌API 6A enforces gas seal tests and fire resistance tests.
API 6D is mainly based on hydrostatic pressure tests, and gas seal tests must be agreed upon separately.
 Certification and Practice Correlation‌
‌Overlapping areas‌: Some high-pressure check valves may comply with both API 6A and API 6D, but the selection should be based on the priority of the actual working conditions.
‌Industry division‌: ‌API 6A certified valves are preferred for oilfield drilling and production equipment; ‌API 6D certified valves are preferred for gas transmission trunk lines and storage and transportation hubs.
