What is the difference between API 600 and 602?

API 602 is the core standard for gate valves, globe valves, and check valves with a diameter of DN100 (4 inches) and below in the oil and gas industry, covering materials from carbon steel to duplex stainless steel.

API 600, short for "High-Pressure Welding Flanges for Petrochemical Plants," is an important standard commonly used in the petrochemical industry. This standard mainly specifies the dimensions, tolerances, materials, welding requirements, and inspection rules for high-pressure welding flanges.

1. Standard Nature and Scope

API 600: Applicable to steel gate valves in industries such as oil and gas, covering design, materials, manufacturing, and testing requirements.

API 602: Specifically for small carbon steel gate valves, suitable for small carbon steel gate valves with flanged or welded connections.

2. Valve Size:

API 600 covers all valve sizes, while the API 602 standard focuses on gate valves, ball valves, and check valves of DN100 (NPS 4) and below, offering a more compact design.

3. Pressure Rating and Material:

API 600 is applicable to almost all pressure ratings, but offers relatively fewer material choices. In contrast, API 602, while covering a smaller range of pressure ratings, provides more material options to meet the needs of different working environments.

4. Core Content Differences

API 600:

Design Specifications: Emphasizes versatility, applicable to various industrial scenarios.

Manufacturing Requirements: Clearly defines the manufacturing processes and quality control requirements for key components such as the valve body, valve cover, and valve stem.

Inspection and Testing: Specifies the inspection and testing requirements for the valve to ensure its performance and safety.

API 602:

Design Specification: Specifies the structural, dimensional, and material requirements for small carbon steel gate valves.

Manufacturing Requirements: Includes the manufacturing processes and quality control for key components such as the valve body, valve cover, and valve stem.

Inspection and Testing: Specifies the inspection and testing requirements for the valve to ensure its performance and safety.

5. Application Scenarios

API 600: Applicable to the selection of steel gate valves in industries such as oil and gas.

API 602: Applicable to the selection of small carbon steel gate valves in industries such as oil and gas.
