An automated triple offset butterfly valve is a metal-seated quarter-turn valve supplied with a pneumatic, electric or hydraulic actuator on an ISO 5211 mounting pad. The body covers DN50–DN1200 (NPS 2–48) in Class 150–900, with a metal or laminated seat rated from −29 °C to +425 °C and seat leakage tested to ISO 5208 Rate D. What decides whether the package holds is a number most catalogues do not publish: the higher of breakaway torque and seating torque at the maximum shutoff differential, checked again on the spring stroke of the fail direction.

Actuator Sizing in One Page
The disc touches its seat only in the first and last two or three degrees. The triple offset butterfly valve torque therefore has two peaks and a low middle: running torque is bearing, packing and fluid drag, often 20 to 30 percent of the end values. Breakaway torque and seating torque are the only two that govern. A quotation that gives a single "operating torque" understates the actuator by three to five times.
| Point | Where it occurs | What raises it |
|---|---|---|
| T1 breakaway | First 2–3° of opening | Differential pressure, seat contact band, deposits, long dormancy |
| T2 running | Mid-stroke | Bearings, packing, fluid drag |
| T3 seating | Last 2–3° of closing | Differential pressure (self-energised seal), torque setting, stop position |
Actuator sizing takes five steps in this order:
Read the maker's torque table at the maximum shutoff differential, not at line pressure.
Take the higher of T1 and T3. Ask whether the table already includes a service factor.
Apply 1.25 for clean on-off, 1.5 for ESD, 1.5–2.0 for dirty media or above 200 °C.
Confirm the output at the minimum site air pressure - often 4.5 bar, not the 5.5 bar on the nameplate.
Repeat on the spring stroke and keep the result below the maximum allowable stem torque.
| Step | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Governing valve torque | 250 N·m | T1 210, T2 60, T3 250 at 25 bar |
| Service factor | × 1.5 | ESD duty |
| Required output | 375 N·m | At the closed position, both directions |
| Air end at 5.5 bar | 500 N·m | Published actuator curve |
| Air end at 4.5 bar | 410 N·m | Derated to site minimum; passes |
| Spring end at 0° | 300 N·m | Below 375 N·m; this frame fails |
| Next frame, spring end | 420 N·m | Passes and stays under the stem limit |
That sequence - passes on air, fails on spring - is the most common sizing error on this valve, because the workshop test always has air. Oversizing is also a fault: past the stem limit the seat contact band deforms, breakaway rises on the next stroke, and the valve starts "getting stiff".
Why Source from GNEE
GNEE supplies automated triple offset butterfly valve packages to oil and gas, power, chemical and district heating projects, and has served more than 160 customers across those markets. The valve, actuator and accessories are quoted as one assembly with one torque record, because that is how they are tested before shipment.
Valve and actuator matched at the quotation stage, not after the order, with the spring check done for the stated fail direction.
ISO 9001 quality system; EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates traceable to heat number.
Third-party inspection supported at the production stage, with the test witnessed before packing.
OEM and ODM: project nameplate, specified actuator brand, and drawing-based modifications.

FAQ
Can we mount our own actuator on your valve body?
Yes, if the mounting pad, drive and torque match. A body-only unit is supplied with an ISO 5211 pad, a spigot and a square drive of a stated size, together with the valve torque table at the maximum shutoff differential. Check three things before ordering: the flange designation and bolt circle, the square drive and stem height, and whether your actuator's output at the site minimum pressure, and at the spring end, exceeds the governing valve torque.
Are the solenoid, limit switch and air set included in the price?
State them on the RFQ, because a valve plus actuator is the usual base offer and the accessories are separate line items. A working on-off package needs a 3/2 solenoid for spring return or a 5/2 for double acting, a limit switch box and a filter regulator. A positioner, quick exhaust, speed control, accumulator or declutchable override is added only when the duty requires it.
The valve is closed but the seat still passes. What do we check first?
Check the closed stop before the seat. On a triple offset valve the seal is made in the last two or three degrees, so a stop or limit set on the actuator rather than on the valve leaves the disc short of the cone. Then check the torque switch setting, whether the differential exceeds the quoted shutoff value, and whether solids are packed into the seat cone. Seat damage from over-torque is the last thing to suspect, not the first.
Why does the actuator work in our workshop but stall on site?
Because the workshop gauge reads 6 or 7 bar and the site holds 4.5 bar at peak demand, and output torque falls with supply pressure. A package sized on the nameplate 5.5 bar can pass every bench test and still fail to seat on site. Ask for the actuator torque curve at the site minimum and, on a spring return unit, at the spring end of the fail stroke.
Can the valve be operated by hand if the air supply fails?
Yes, if a manual override is ordered. A declutchable gear unit lets the handwheel drive the stem with the actuator disengaged; without one, a double acting actuator cannot be moved by hand and a spring return unit can only travel to its fail position. Check the handwheel force on large sizes, and disengage the clutch before air is restored.
Can the actuator be mounted horizontally or below the valve?
Mechanically a quarter-turn actuator works in any orientation, but three constraints decide it. Keep the solenoid exhaust and the breather where water cannot collect, keep the handwheel and positioner visible and accessible, and support the actuator's weight above DN400 instead of hanging it on the pad. Mounting below the valve is acceptable in dry indoor service, not in washdown or outdoor areas.
What should be witnessed at the factory before the package is packed?
Shell test at 1.5 times rating, seat test at 1.1 times in both directions, a torque record with the actuator mounted and the stop set, a full spring stroke with the air removed, and the limit switch positions recorded at the valve. Positioner calibration and any API 607 or API 641 test follow if ordered. Witness at production, because a packed valve cannot be stroked.
Which spare parts should be kept for an automated triple offset valve?
For two years of holding: one seat ring and one stem packing set per size, an actuator seal kit, one solenoid coil, one limit switch and a set of filter elements. Seat and packing are the wear items; the body and disc normally outlast them. Actuator spares should match the frame size, not only the brand.
