The most unique feature of an eccentric plug valve is that its seat is offset from the valve shaft, providing an eccentric action. A medium-sized valve may have an offset of ½ inch. As the valve opens counterclockwise about the shaft, the valve plug will lift off the seat as it rotates. The lifting action helps prevent galling in grit wastewater service. The valve's sealing function is aided by "direct pressure" which pushes the valve plug tightly into the seat. The valve will also seal with pressure in the "reverse pressure" direction, but this requires turning the valve plug clockwise past the center of the seat. Due to the eccentric action, the greater the closing rotation, the tighter the seal. In service, if the valve wears, the valve can be closed further to restore the seal.
