Check valves are flow sensitive and rely on line pressure and flow to open and close. The internal disc allows fluid to flow forward, thus opening the valve. As forward flow decreases or reverses, the disc begins to close the valve, depending on the design. The function or purpose of a check valve is to prevent reverse flow. The structure is usually very simple, with only a few parts, such as valve body, valve seat, valve disc and valve cover. Depending on the design, there may be other items such as stems, hinge pins, disc arms, springs, balls, elastomers, and bearings.
