Piston Type Check Valve Features

  • Sealing ability

Seats are angled to prevent media buildup. When backflow occurs, the seat is flushed clean before contacting the piston.

  • Full-Area Flow

The port openings on the valve are full ports. This differs from other piston check valve designs with smaller port openings. As a result, piston check valves provide more flow.

  • Spring Loading

The piston is spring loaded so the valve can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The area of the spring exposed to the medium is minimized. The guides correctly position the piston during the closed and open positions. This prevents the piston from jamming in the valve and ensures good and reliable closing.

How do piston check valves work?

Piston check valves work by utilizing the principle of differential pressure. To open a piston check valve, the fluid pressure must be greater than the outlet pressure. In this case, the fluid pressure energy becomes high enough to lift the valve disk off the valve seat. As the valve disc moves upward, it leaves room for fluid to pass through the valve. Fluid continues to flow through the piston check valve until the suction pressure drops. In this case, the fluid begins to reverse from the outlet side to the suction side due to the lower inlet pressure. However, piston check valve manufacturers design these valves to be highly pressure sensitive so that the valve closes immediately before a large amount of fluid begins to flow back. Fluid flowing backward can cause damage to equipment such as boilers or pumps. It can also lead to losses due to unwanted contamination. The use of piston check valves in certain industrial applications is therefore unavoidable.
