BS 1868 Check Valve

BS 1868 Check Valve

BS 1868 specifies the technical requirements for flanged and butt-weld check valves used in the petroleum and petrochemical industries. These check valves are usually made of cast or forged steel and are suitable for a variety of industrial applications, including the transfer of media such as water, oil, chemicals and steam.

BS 1868 Check Valve Description

BS 1868 is a special specification for steel check valves in the British Standard. Its full name is "Flanged and butt-welded steel check valves for use in petroleum, petrochemical and related industries". The standard was first published in 1975 and reconfirmed in 1990 (R1990). It mainly stipulates the design, manufacture, testing and material requirements of flange-connected and butt-welded steel check valves. It is suitable for media backflow control in industrial pipeline systems such as petroleum and chemical industries.

Structural design features ‌
‌Valve body type‌:

‌Swing design‌: The valve disc rotates around the pin outside the valve seat, relying on the medium flow pressure to open, and closing by its own weight and reverse pressure;
‌Lift design‌: The valve disc rises and falls vertically along the axis of the valve seat, with better sealing performance, suitable for small and medium-sized pipes.
‌Sealing optimization‌:

The hard sealing structure adopts surfacing Stellite or hard alloy, and its erosion resistance is significantly better than that of soft sealing;
The self-sealing mechanism has enhanced sealing performance under high pressure, suitable for high pressure levels above Class 600.

‌Connection form‌:

‌Flange end‌: Meets ASME B16.5 or BS 4504 flange standards, suitable for general pipeline systems;
‌Butt welding end‌: Directly connected to the pipeline by welding, suitable for high pressure, high temperature or higher sealing requirements.
‌Applicable media and working conditions‌:

Mainly used in industries such as petroleum, petrochemicals, and natural gas, suitable for liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon media;
Applicable to clean fluids (not suitable for solid particles or high viscosity media).
‌Pressure level‌:

Compatible with Class 150 to Class 2500 (corresponding to PN16~PN420)

Applications and Advantages ‌
‌Typical Scenarios‌:

Anti-backflow control of oil and gas pipelines in refineries to reduce the risk of pump reversal;
The cutoff of corrosive media (such as acidic gas) in chemical plants requires the selection of corrosion-resistant alloy materials.
‌Technical Advantages‌:

Standardized flange size and structural length to improve valve interchangeability and installation efficiency;
The high-pressure self-sealing mechanism extends valve life and reduces maintenance frequency.
BS 1868 check valves have become key equipment for anti-backflow control in the petroleum and chemical industries due to their standardized high-pressure design and flexibility to adapt to multiple industrial scenarios.
